Our Mission
To equip and develop a new generation of leaders of integrity and excellence
who will transform Armenian society for the lasting good.
Leadership through Service
The goal of the Center for Leadership Development (CLD) is to
develop a network of young leaders who are committed to a new paradigm of
leadership: one, which identifies and embraces the values essential for forming
civil society. A good leader is defined as one whose followers do the right
things for the right reason. Leadership through service is a recurrent theme at
the Center. Such leaders are required to shape the new democratic nation of Armenia.
The Center selects young Armenian leaders of extraordinary
promise. They are drawn from influential vocations such as business, law,
government, media, and education. The faculty focuses on helping students
fulfill their leadership potential by concentrating on (1) calling, (2) character, (3)
competence, and (4) community.
Calling
Every individual has the innate capacity to excel in one or
more kinds of work. The identification of each person's unique matrix of
motivations and abilities is critical in defining life goals. The students are
encouraged to pursue and fulfill their life goals by positive mentoring and
related workshops, and significant time for individual consultation is
incorporated into the weekly schedule.
Character
Students study the lives and character traits of famous
political, social and religious leaders. Students are also invited to spend time
as individuals or small groups with members of the faculty of the Center in a
mentoring relationship. Character traits such as self-discipline, courage,
perseverance, loyalty, faith, confidence, honesty, integrity and compassion
receive particular attention.
Competence
Meaningful life goals and character must be pursued with
excellence if leadership is to be extraordinary. Students study practical
principles of leadership contained in books such as Steven Covey's "The 7 Habits
of Highly Effective People", and "Principle-Centered Leadership". Their study also includes training in time management,
effective communication, conflict
resolution, human resource management, strategic planning and identifying and
developing different leadership styles. They have opportunities to hear,
question, and spend individual time with the faculty of the Center from Armenia, North
America, Europe and CIS countries. We believe that it is vital for our students
to not merely hear "stories" about excellence, but to see it in partnership with
character and displayed in the lives and example of our faculty.
Community
Students are encouraged from the start of the program to work as teams.
We encourage the pooling of information and resources and advocate the principle
that real change can be made more effectively when there is unity of purpose and
mutual commitment.
After the students have completed leadership training courses, they examine
their areas of expertise and create new ways to promote positive change in
society. These CLD "final projects" allow the students to integrate
what they have learned, their calling, character, and competence, into all areas
of Armenian life. While some projects are underway for one or two
semesters, others continue for extended periods of time and spawn related
programs. The students make valuable contacts in their community and have
a chance to network with others who share an interest in improving the same
sector of society. The Center encourages alumni to continue their work
after graduation, collaborating with other students and alumni, in order to
initiate reforms in Armenia.
